Week 4 Blog: Acting and Acting Styles in GoodFellas

Acting and Acting Styles in GoodFellas

In this weeks  blog I will identify three actors and their characters portrayed in the following movie, GoodFellas. The first character I will identify is that of in the Interpreter type role of acting, and recognizable, Robert De Niro, who plays James “Jimmy the Gent” Conway in this film. Interpreter means this description more typically refers to actors who take material and put their own stamp on it (Goodykoontz, and Jacobs, C. P. (2014). Often this involves actors interpreting well-known roles. In the film, GoodFellas, Robert De Niro, plays Jimmy The Gent, one of the associates to mob boss Paulie Cicero, and loves to hijack trucks. His character, is present but doesn’t overwhelm the film by his presence.

In the above scene, it shows the excitement by Jimmy “The Gent” Conway, of the next actor I will discuss and his acting style, Tommy, who is played by Joe Pesci. Joe Pesci is easily recognized for many roles in Martin Scorsese movies, like “GoodFellas”, and “Casino”, But also in movies like “Lethal Weapon 4”. His acting style could be best described as a star acting style, or as he won an award for his role in this movie, best supporting actor. A star acting style is a distinctive screen persona who is well known and popular with the movie going public, often to the point that some avid movie fans become deeply curious about the actor’s private life. Hollywood has had a century-long love affair with stars, since the days of Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. Stars are actors who are simply famous on screen and off, personalities so magnetic that we are interested not just in their movies, but in their personal lives as well (Goodykoontz, and Jacobs, C. P. (2014). He could also be considered a Personality style actor as well, An actor whose own personality tends to define all the characters he or she portrays, so that the actor’s name alone lets audiences know what the screen character will be like (Goodykoontz, and Jacobs, C. P. (2014). I say this because of the following excerpt I found in regards to Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro first working together in the Martin Scorsese 1980 film “Raging Bull”, which led to Joe Pesci compromising the role of Tommy DeVito in “GoodFellas”. In this role he seems to playing a role close to him, an Italian tough guy, and Pesci comes across like that in many of his films (Biography, 2015).

And the last actor I will discuss is that of the main character but kind of the star acting or character acting role in this film, Ray Iotta, who plays Henry Hill. He starts the movie off by narrating his childhood and how he was interested in the mob life, and drops out of school to do just that and works his way up. He shows being the character acting role by playing a wide variety of characters, most often supporting or minor roles rather than leading roles (Goodykoontz, and Jacobs, C. P. (2014). And, Iotta fits the star role for his acting in this film, because a star is a distinctive screen persona who is well known and popular with the movie going public, often to the point that some avid movie fans become deeply curious about the actor’s private life.

The actor I would focus on in that being categorized in the same way, is that of Robert De Niro, from his roles in Heat, Raging Bull, GoodFellas, The Godfather part 2, Taxi Driver, The Fan, Great Expectations, his roles have all been the same, as that of an interpreter acting style. Below are some of the other films he’s played in.

In these clips it shows Rober De Niro’s top moments to his roles in The Godfather 2 as Vito Corleone, to his roles in the films like the Fan, Great Expectations. His roles in these films seem to all take a serious approach.

My Blog: Analyzing Sound in Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen

Analyzing Sound in Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen

In this weeks  blog, I will discuss the effect of sound in a movie, especially in the clip I will cover named, Transformers 2:Revenge of the Fallen. This movie is a mixture of three genres, covering sci fi, action and suspense. I would  say based on the clip provided this movie has a lot of diegetic and non-diegetic, because in this clip, the music can be heard to the audience but not to the characters themselves. Then with the sound effects from the transformers, the characters can hear them , and its what forces them to move very fast, as the music plays, indicating danger is vastly approaching.

An example of type of sound in this clip and this movie would be digital sound. This following excerpt I took from a textbook, Digital recording systems convert the analog electrical signals from a microphone into an arbitrary code of ones and zeroes that another converter can decode back into audible sound. The result is the elimination of all analog background noise, whether a faint hiss from magnetic media, periodic clicks and pops from flaws or dirt on optical film, or a needle scraping against a disk. Digital recordings’ dynamic range from dead silence to the loudest possible recording was drastically improved over analog systems. Filmmakers started to record digital audio in the 1980s and theaters started adding digital sound playback capability in the 1990s (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. P. (2014).

http://movieclips.com/uohCQ-transformers-revenge-of-the-fallen-movie-hiding-in-the-ruins/

In this clip from the movie, Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, it opens up with a sound effect from one of the transformer decepticons communicating, and it shows, Sam Witwicky played by Shia LeBeouf) and Mikaela Banes played by Megan Fox hiding in ruins. After the initial sound effect, they stat moving around in this small ruin, and outside is a couple decepticon transformers, the bad guys looking for these two, and Sam motions to Mikaela, to be quiet and not move. Mikaela is shown in fear, its hot outside in desert, shows her sweating and covers her mouth so she doesn’t scream or give them away in any way. Then it goes outside away from them to show battle raging outside between humans, and autobots versus the decepticons transformers, and shows missiles exploding And a giant transformer decepticon is shown which looks scary, hence the type of music being played at this point in clip from movie. This indicates impending danger lurking n the shadows, and the focus deepens and returns to Sam and Mikaela in the ruins. And this occurs when the cameras shooting zoom in with deep focus though a small opening a spy transformer no bigger than a mosquito maybe landing in their to do spy work on the two to see if they are in their and just then, Sam grabs it, looks at it, and smashes it with his fingertips, as the decepticon tears open the roof and locates them and they run as the decepticon tears through the remaining standing ruin. The music helps bring this scene of the movie to life and helps push forward the plot to the next scene, frame by frame, and musical sequence, as well. And lets the audience know that along with the transformers communicating with the use of special effects, the music is also playing apart in forwarding the plot and gives us a little bit of foreshadowing that lies ahead and the danger that lurks. And,  with the music that is playing, that is just what the audience hears, opposed to the sound effect the transformers make and characters in the movie hear. But some of the noises could and some maybe not, but for the most part, many effects are created, and not  real.

Lighting used in a Film

Lighting in the film, 300: The Rise of an Empire

With 300: Rise of an Empire, the lighting used, is that of low-key lighting. Low-key lighting design looks dark overall by comparison. It is marked by extreme use of deep shadows, with very high contrast between the brightest parts of the scene and the darkest parts, which are obscured in shadows (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. P. (2014). From the beginning of the movie, when it shows Xerxes beheading a fallen King Leonidas and his group of 300  Spartans. He then takes the head to Greece and shows them to show his power. It then shows how Xerxes came to power. The lighting is dark but enough to show the characters up close, and some of the movie is shot in 3D to give the audience full affect and almost like they are apart of the battles taking place. The many scenes shot in 3D are very detailed, from the removal of the head of the king, to the battle scenes that take place in which blood is shown splattering across the screen, to the cinders of fire shown falling like snow on a winter’s night.

Often there may be only a single source of light, coming from the back or the side of the main characters. Low-key lighting is often used for intense dramatic scenes, horror films, mystery thrillers, and the like. However, most scenes of most movies fall somewhere in between these extremes of high-key and low-key lighting (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. P. (2014).  The  entire film comes across as it should as dark, eerie and limited color, which helped keep it dark, especially during the time of which this fantasy war action film was meant to portray, during the time of the Persian Empire and many lands were at war amongst  each other. The Spartans were perceived as tough warriors and tough to defeat. Xerxes father King Darius 1 of Persia was a vicious leader and was brought down , killed by Themistocles of Athens with a bow and arrow, as Darius’s son, Xerxes just a  young man looked on. The lighting in this film is incredible with limited back lighting. I guess you could say it has good production design, costumes, brilliantly choreographed battle sequences and stunning CGI. The benefits of the types of lighting used in this film is that it helped bring  it to life, slow it down in some parts and help deliver the details in which the director, producer were trying to get across to the audience.  The time frame during which these mythical battles took place were helped by the low key lighting and other parts like when they were out to sea, you could see in background maybe three point lighting to help show the sun out during a daytime battle, and the gods looking down smiling upon the Spartans, and Greeks, as they fought the Persians to the death.

Bruna Papandrea

Reese Witherspoon

Cean Chafflin

Year: Fall 2014

Story:

This movie is set in the Midwestern State of Missouri, is a mystery, drama  and thriller all wrapped into one. It’s about a man whose wife Amy(Rosamund Pike) who has vanished and appears to be dead but with no body to be seen or found, just forensic  evidence of a horrible crime committed and her husband Nick(Ben Affleck) a suspect.

Plot:

The movie opens with Nick entering the bar he owns with his sister, and talking about how rough things are going. Then he heads home to find his wife(Amy) is missing and calls the police to investigate, to which they find forensic evidence of something gone terribly wrong and the detective Rhonda Boney(Kim Dickens) arrives and  begins to question Nick. The plot picks up with Nick being questioned at the police station and he is asked his wife’s  blood type to if se has any friends and family locally. And with the disappearance it picks up heavy press because of Amy being a  popular children’s book author and brings into town her parents.

And, as the story pushes forward Nick is considered a suspect and people’s  suspicions grow that he murdered her and evidence suggests that. As the movie pushes forward, it shows looking back through Amy’s point of view of how they were having financial issues domestic disputes and Nick losing his job then her. Nick is shown to be lazy, siting around playing video games, and having extra marital affair with a student of his from college. Amy decides to help her parents who are struggling due to recession, with some money, that in reality themselves don’t have a lot of. The, Amy decides they should maybe consider having a baby, and should talk to which Nick gets upset and ends up n the scene shown, shoving Amy down inside their home, and her becoming afraid to point she considers purchasing a  gun for  her own safety.

And at this point in movie the plot thickens as it shows Amy thinking out loud and writing in journal what is happening what she is planning to do to frame him and she wonders if anyone would notice if she just disappeared. That sets the plan in motion for things to come, kind of foreshadowing. But what is to come will and does shock the audience.

She  talks about being the cool girl for Nick and trying to not fight with him and be the drama  queen most women seem to be. And so she disappears into seclusion including a swanky motel and cuts her hair and changes her look while watching the news media coverage of the events taking place. And in then gets caught up by a nosy patron that’s also staying their with her criminal boyfriend and they steal  a lot of money from Amy to the point she calls up her ex from years ago she got into trouble and goes to stay with him for a few days and ends up watching a news story with Nick that sets her off to point where she betrays Desi(Neil Patrick Harris), and kills him during sex,  then returns  home  covered  in blood, naming  him  as  her  captor and  rapist, clearing  Nick of suspicion.

Chronology:This story with this movie is told in that of chronological order. Which helps the story so the  audience doesn’t become disengaged and lose interest, and advances all the characters development in story.

This story if it had been told in a different manner would take away the twists and plots told.

The Bone Collector starring Denzell Washington

                                                  By:

                                       Daniel Werntz

In this blog, I will by using Mise en Scene, go behind the scenes with actor Denzell Washington and his character in the movie “The Bone Collector”. This 1999 thriller film that stars Denzell Washington, Angelina Jolie, and directed by Phillip Noyce and produced by Martin Bregman. The movie was based on the crime novel of the same name written by one Jeffrey Deaver, concerning the quadriplegic detective Lincoln Rhyme(played by Washington). It was the first book of the Lincoln Rhyme series. The film itself takes place in New York City in 1998.

This film also stars actors aside from the main character of Lincoln Rhyme(played by Denzell Washington as mentioned before), a patrol cop Amelia Donaghy(played by Angelina Jolie), his nurse(played by Queen Latifah). I selected these three characters to help classify the types of  actors in this movie. This is done to shown their roles aside from the protagonist role Washington plays in this film and the antagonist role played the bad guy as we find out toward the end by his medical technician Richard Thompson(played by Leland Orser).

With the characters played in movie I mentioned I will tell their role and how they are portrayed. Denzell Washington’s character is the main character in this movie as Detective Rhyme who is quadriplegic and cant work the scenes of the crime anymore, obviously. So he is drawn into this case by a former fellow cop to look at the pictures and draw a conclusion or profile to help the police get any leads or signatures from photos taken at crime scene by a star character Angelina Jolie who plays a patrol officer who happened to be close by when a person says they found a persons hand, so she goes to investigate, and upon arrival notices there’s more than meets the eye, and quickly asks a kid to go to store and get a camera and gives him some money, and jumps into action to help stop a  moving train before it  destroys crucial evidence needed. These photos are what is brought to Rhyme’s attention and he seizures then comes through and starts looking at pictures, and the cameras rather than going slowly through images, tend to go faster inside Rhymes head, as his former fellow cop looks on mesmerized.

The next character I will focus on and the last of the three, is that of Rhyme’s nurse, played by Queen Latifah. She tends to be a personality actor, or even a wild card. I say this because if her character played in film is focused too much on her, then it could take away from the main characters in this movie, which are the patrol cop and the detective, as well as the bad guy. The nurse could take on many roles in film like assisting Rhyme with medicine and at times her input is asked to help with  a puzzle like picture because Rhyme knows she is good with puzzles. And also , when Rhyme has a seizure, she is the one that comes into the picture to help him and get things under control to help push the movie forward. I also think she could fall into that of a bit part with few lines in the movie but tend to lean toward that of a personality character or  wild card mostly.

I would say with Denzell Washington he tends to play the role of that of mostly an authority figure. I say this based on the fact in many of his movies, from Flight(he plays the pilot), to Man on Fire(he plays a former federal agent that is hired in Mexico to protect a young girl who ends up kidnapped), American Gangster(as a drug lord), Remember the Titans(head football coach), to finally that of the role in He got Game( as convict/father). It also seems from the prospective of many that he tends  to play the same roles over and over, with just the storyline different, think of how many roles hes played a  fbi agent, and police detective). I think what this says about one Denzell Washington is he wants the audience to take him seriously and takes on roles maybe reserved in the past for say Gene Hackman or some other actor along those lines. I think I have yet to see Washington play a  comedic role. And I think if he took the role of that, it might not work, so he sticks with what he knows will work. the bone Collector though not a  huge favorite amongst his fans, or critics, it was in fact a  good movie nonetheless(silentarchimedes, 2008).

The setting is based in New York City, the camera angles come from many sides, the lighting tends to be low key lighting it seems, and the props go from being staying in place in his hospital type bed in his apartment to the subway to the streets of New York City in taxi cab, and abandoned places to underground  to the recovery of a woman kidnapped then life taken when police don’t get to her in time. The costumes are that of detectives wear in every day life but at times in trenchcoats and police officer uniforms.

Types of Sound “Transformers 4: Age of Extinction

Types of Sound “Transformers 4: Age of Extinction”

By: Dan Werntz

In this Blog, I will talk about the three basic categories of sound: Dialogue, Sound Effects and Music. All three of these categories play a part in the film “Transformers 4 :Age of Extinction”

I will discuss the first of these categories, Dialogue. Dialogue is what happens between characters when they talk to one another in movies/films, so much that at times the audience takes it for granted or doesn’t appreciate it as much. But creating scenes in which characters talk to one another as they do in real life is no easy task, an example of this is in the film I chose, “Transformers 4: Age of Extinction”, where there’s dialogue not only between humans but also the Transformers themselves and dialogue understood between both humans and the transformers interacting amongst each other. In the opening of the movie it shows a man Cade Yeager played by Mark Wahlberg, a struggling single father of a teenage high school daughter trying to make ends meet by inventing new things to be bought for money to help pay bills and put her through college hopefully, when he stumbles upon Optimus Prime an autobot, in a small Texas town theater pretty beat up by mortal shells in a battle with bad guy humans and decepticons(also bad guys) helping them south of the border in Mexico City. Then, Cade takes the beat up semi back to his ranch to fix the truck up, at this point finding out he’s a autobot transformer and admits he was going to turn him in for cash reward but decides after coming face to face with Optimus to help him out. This is the first dialogue between human and Transformer alien robot in this movie, and after the initial opening dialogue with Cade and his daughter and Cade and his friend whose come to the town to help Cade out with repairs and what not. In filming this  movie, some voice overs with transformer robots had to be voiced over to satisfy the director with both mood trying to be conveyed and also to cut out any background noise maybe heard in first go around, this is also known as automated dialogue replacement(ADR), or looping, actors often re-record their lines so that they can be heard more clearly, in the post production editing process that takes place.

Secondly, is the Sound Effects in the next category to be discussed in this blog. Like its predecessor, Transformers Revenge of the Fallen which was hugely successful in 2009, which was the sequel to the first Transformers movie, in which cars and trucks are revealed to be aliens who have disguised themselves, the sounds of explosions might as well be a credited member of the cast, so ubiquitous are they. The bone crunching loud, theater surround sound theater rattling explosions which serve one purpose and that’s to enhance the action. This is also true in the 4th installment and the first in this new trilogy from Transformers, from the opening where it shows the alien ships exterminating to extinction the dinosaurs, to the fight scenes set in Hong Kong, and without these sounds, it takes everything away from the movie, no dialogue, no music, no explosions heard, will be just like watching something on a screen but no idea of what is taking place or the effect trying to be  conveyed. Every film uses sound effect to help draw in the audience and keep it there.(Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. P. (2014).

Lastly of the three basic categories with sound is that of Music. In the opening scene showing Cade Yeager, in the movie Transformers 4, he is shown driving a pick up truck with music playing as he’s  driving down the road and a train is going down the tracks next to him on his way home. This is to give a down home feel to help draw in the audience’s interest and to give the audience the sense that this was meant to be a calming of things to come. Music with Transformers has been a part of the movie since the very first Transformers was introduced and continues with the 4th installment of this movie. The music score in this movie as it has been with other installments is indeed present, and goes hand in hand with other categories of sound trying to get across tot he audience to help draw their interest and keep them there. A good example of this was in the 2nd Transformers a good soundtrack was put in place and a great promotional video as well by Linkin Park and their song “A New Divide” , a very good video and promoting tool used to help draw in the audience and more people to see the movie. So with each installment, the idea is to draw the audience with maybe a sample promotional song and the audience watches the movie for new songs to go home and download or go out and buy along with the  movie itself.

To sum this blog and choice in movie up, I would say the action sequences and the surround sound effect, go hand in hand with that of a action, drama, sci fi, fantasy cross genre theme, and without it, it would be a boring movie, and the audience not understand what is point of the movie and quickly lose interest. And I think the fighting sequences because it focuses so much on Transformer alien robots fighting it out, and alien robot transformer bounty hunter hunting autobots down for a  bad guy human CIA  for a seed, its highly unlikely and why it draws in the fantasy and sci fi genre. The sound effects aren’t real but made up through special effects and sounds from computer generated sounds, but nonetheless, help push the action forward and keep the audience in their seat.

42 The movie, and how lighting plays its part

Title: 42

Director: Brian Helgeland

Producer: Thomas Tull

Written by: Brian Helgeland

Starring: Chadwick Boseman

Harrison Ford

Edited by: Kevin Stitt

Peter Mcnulty

Budget $40 Million

Box Office $97,470, 701

Release Date: April 12, 2013

Plot:

This movie, 42  tells the story of Jackie Robinson, and under the guidance of team owner/exec Branch Rickey, and Robinson signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers to become the first African-American player in the modern era to break the color barrier. The  story in the movie focuses mostly on the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers season and somewhat on Robinson’s 1946 season with the Montreal Royals along with Robinson’s battles with racism.

Lighting: How did this technique contribute to the theme?

The type of lighting used within this drama genre type movie with  sub-genre of action, is that of three-point lighting. “The lighting is used for in this case, dramatic scenes in the film portrayed. As with most drama type movies/films the lighting used will vary the intensity and positions of the fill and back lights to suit the mood or to simulate the sources of light visible in the scene”( Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. P. (2014).

An example of this is when the Dodgers are playing I believe the Phillies and the crowd is very rude and calling Robinson names as is the players and coach. Its a night time game so good lighting was needed to help bring this film to life and exclude any shadows from being seen. And again, anytime any lamps or street  lights were shown in the movie. With this type of three point lighting, what it does or can do is this, shadows in particular can be made to sharper or softer by aiming lights directly at the subject, through diffusion screens or at reflective surfaces.

Had different lighting been used, it might have made the movie not seem as believable or could have took away from the movie altogether. This movie was about a baseball player and the idea behind this was to make it seem as real as possible  and how it might have looked or did look back when Robinson was playing. And to take the audience back in time to that point and help tell the story. More lighting wouldn’t have done the movie justice. And not enough would have made it dark. This movie also used natural lighting, so the directors had to shoot at different times of the day to help tell the story, at different points, much like back in those days.

The story of The LIon KIng, is a 1994 American animated musical animated adventure film that takes place in the kingdom of lions in Africa. and, it was influenced by the biblical tales of that of Joseph and Moses and the Shakespearean play “Hamlet”. The Lion King tells the story of that of a lion born , and named Simba. He’s a young lion who is to succeed his father, Mufasa, as king, However, after Simba’s bad guy Uncle Scar is responsible for the murder of Simba’s father, Mufasa, Young Simba is fooled into it was he whose responsible for his father’s death. As a result, Simba is forced to flee into exile in shame and despair.

Then Simba matures after meeting two wastrels(Pumbaa and Timon). Simba is given a very valuable lesson from his childhood friend and girlfriend Nala and his shalman Rafiki, a mandrill monkey who’s very wise, before returning to challenge his Uncle Scar and his cast of bad guys including Hyenas.

Continuing with the plot: Simba ascends to  the  top of Pride Rock and  takes over  the  kingdom  as the  rain falls  again. Sometime  later, with  Pride Rock restored to its former glory,  Simba looks  down happily  at his kingdom with Nala, Timon, and  Pumbaa by  his side; Rafiki presents  Simba  and Nala’s  newborn  cub to  the  inhabitants  of  the  Pride  Lands  and  the “circle of life”  continues

With the storyline, animation and messages within the movie itself and good sountrack, this movie is one of the best grossing animation films of all time and a Disney classic and favorite easily. It appealed to both children and adults alike that saw it in theaters as evidenced by the numbers and by the number of  vhs/dvd’s  in homes across the world, and watched to this day. There’s  even a parade in Disneyland in California that is referred to as “The Lion King Parade”

One of the messages conveyed in this film is that it teaches kids and adults how the circle of life portrayed and how everything plays its part in doing so. Example, We eat food, we use the restroom and sometimes its used as fertilizer to grow grass which cows eat and we  in turn have uses for cows or wait until they mature and then eat them to survive.
